Your Driveway Is Too Steep. What Can Be Done?

Most driveways that ground a car can be fixed without touching the overall slope. One short section where the grade changes abruptly usually does the damage, and it can be cut out and re-formed for a fraction of what a new driveway costs.

The options run from a rubber ramp you order online to regrading the block, and the cheap end works less often than people hope. Re-forming the transition sits in the middle, and it's the answer most of the time.

Slope or transition? This decides everything

You can usually tell without instruments. Drive to where it grounds and look.

If the underside touches at one point and clears everywhere else, you have a transition problem, and the car is bridging a break in the profile while its wheels follow the surface. Labouring the whole way up means the slope itself is too steep for that vehicle.

Transition problems are far more common. A long driveway at an even 1 in 5 is often fine, while a gentle one with a sharp kink at the street will catch every time. Where cars scrape covers the three places it happens.

Cost and effectiveness don't run in the same direction, which is what makes the decision awkward. The two cheapest options leave the driveway's shape exactly as it was.

The cheap end, and where it runs out

Two remedies come up constantly, and each has a narrow band where it works.

Rubber kerb ramps

Where a car catches lightly on one edge they sometimes work, because the ramp lets the wheels rise before the bumper arrives. Two things limit them. They shift under load and need re-fixing, and the place most cars scrape is the vehicle crossing, which sits on council land, not your property. Read which part of the driveway you own first.

Grinding a high spot

Grinding takes the peak off a crest so the grade change eases, and where contact is light and confined to a metre or so it is the tidiest cheap fix there is.

What limits it is how much concrete sits above the reinforcement, because slabs are not thick, the mesh inside them needs cover to stay protected, and steel left without cover rusts and cracks the concrete from within. So grinding takes millimetres off a crest. It cannot lengthen a transition, and pushing past the mesh trades a scrape for a dearer one.

Re-forming the transition is the usual real fix

A section of driveway is saw-cut out, the base re-prepared, and the piece re-poured at a longer, gentler transition than the one that was there.

It works because it addresses the cause. Where a driveway uses the Queensland 1 in 4 concession, each end of the steep section needs a transition of at least a metre, no steeper than 1 in 8, and a driveway built to that bare minimum can still catch a low car, so run it longer while the saw is out. Room is the constraint. Lengthening a transition consumes driveway, and a short frontage may not have enough between kerb and garage door.

Re-pouring, regrading, and knowing when to stop

Re-pouring makes sense where the profile is wrong along its length rather than at one break, and it comes with two fixed points that cannot be moved cheaply: the level at your boundary, set by the kerb and crossing, and the level of the garage slab.

Regrading, meaning cutting or filling the ground itself, moves one of those. On a large sloping site it is occasionally right. On a typical house block it means earthworks, retaining, drainage and usually an approval, all for a driveway, and it rarely stacks up.

Where the levels genuinely cannot work, the driveway can be improved but not made comfortable, and the car may have to change instead.

If you haven't bought the house yet

A driveway that cannot be fixed cheaply is telling you something about the block, and it will still be saying it after settlement. Steep frontages and a large drop across a short distance are site conditions, not finishes. Measure it against how steep a driveway can be.

Drive it in the car you own, not the one the agent parks out front. A single break at the kerb points to a saw cut and a small pour. Too steep the whole way and you are at the expensive end of the table above. What rectification costs is a useful read first.
