A driveway that does not comply is one of the more expensive things to get wrong on a residential job, because concrete is unforgiving. There is no adjusting a poured slab that grounds a client's ute — it comes out and goes back in.
The obvious question is how much this costs the industry. We went looking for a published national figure and did not find one. What follows is what the research does say, what it does not, and how to work out the number that actually matters, which is yours.
There is no driveway-specific national figure
We could not find any published Australian dataset isolating the cost of rectifying non-compliant residential driveways. Not from the ABS, not from state building regulators, not in the academic literature.
That is not especially surprising. Rectification of a driveway is usually absorbed into a builder's cost of works, a variation, or a defects liability claim, and none of those are reported in a way that separates driveways from any other trade. Anyone quoting you a precise national figure for this is almost certainly extrapolating, and it is worth asking from what.
What the rework research does say
Rework — redoing something that was not right the first time — has been studied extensively in Australian construction, and the figures are substantial. Research by Love and colleagues has put the mean direct cost of rework at around 6.4% of contract value, with indirect costs adding a further 5.9%.
Other studies land lower. Love and Li (2000) estimated rework in residential construction at about 3.15% of contract value, and separate work on quality-failure costs in Australian residential projects put those at around 4%. At the low end, one study across 98 projects found a mean of just 0.39%.
That spread — from well under one per cent to over twelve — is itself informative. The figures vary because researchers define rework differently, capture different indirect costs, and study different project types. Treat any single number quoted without its methodology with caution.
Why driveways sit at the expensive end
Most rework is caught before it is finished. A wall in the wrong place is re-framed; a misplaced service is re-run. The cost is labour and a little material.
A driveway is different in three ways. It is usually poured late, so the error surfaces near handover when the client is present. It is monolithic, so partial correction is rarely possible. And the failure mode is often discovered by a vehicle scraping rather than by an inspection, which makes it a dispute rather than a defect.
None of that is captured in a percentage-of-contract figure, which is another reason the general rework research only takes you so far.
Work out your own number
A more useful exercise than hunting for a national statistic is a bottom-up estimate on your own jobs. Four inputs, all of which you already know or can obtain from your concreter:
First, the cost to remove and re-pour a residential driveway — demolition, disposal, base preparation, materials and labour. Second, the cost of the delay: how long handover slips and what that costs you. Third, the soft costs — site visits, the meetings, the correspondence, and the time your drafting or supervision staff spend on it. Fourth, how often it happens across a year of work.
Multiply the first three, then by the fourth. For most residential builders the honest answer is that one rectification a year costs more than a great deal of software, and the number is dominated by the delay and the dispute rather than by the concrete.
The cheaper failure is the one caught on paper
Every dollar in that calculation is spent because a problem reached site. The same problem identified on a long section — before anyone ordered concrete — costs the time it takes to change three numbers and re-issue a drawing.
That is the entire economic argument for checking gradients and vehicle clearance at design stage rather than discovering them at handover. It does not require a national statistic to be persuasive; it requires one rectification you would rather not have had.
