A driveway profile connects two fixed points — the front boundary level and the garage or slab level — across a defined length, with a series of gradients and transitions in between. Getting this right affects vehicle access, drainage, constructability, and compliance with maximum-grade and rate-of-change expectations.
Without a clear profile, a certifier has to infer the design intent from fragments of information spread across several drawings.
Common information certifiers need
At minimum, a certifier typically wants to see the boundary RL, garage RL, overall driveway length, direction (upslope or downslope from the boundary), the individual gradient zones and their ratios, and where transitions between zones occur.
Rate-of-change information — how abruptly the gradient changes between zones — is particularly important, since abrupt transitions can create vehicle clearance and comfort issues even when individual gradients are within an acceptable maximum.
Clear documentation reduces clarification requests
When RLs, gradient zones, and transition locations are presented in a single, consistent diagram with labelled values, a certifier can review the design intent directly rather than requesting clarification from the drafting team.
This does not remove the need for professional judgement — it simply reduces the amount of avoidable back-and-forth caused by missing or inconsistent information.
