Boundary RL to Garage RL: A Practical Driveway Design Workflow

Most residential driveway design follows a similar sequence of steps, from gathering site information through to producing documentation the wider project team can rely on. This article walks through that sequence in a practical order.

1. Gathering survey information

Start with the boundary RL, garage or slab RL, kerb and footpath levels where relevant, and any other site levels available from a survey. The more complete the level information, the more reliable the resulting design.

2. Confirming design levels and driveway length

Confirm the garage or target RL against the current architectural design, and measure or confirm the driveway length between the boundary and the garage entry.

3. Understanding upslope and downslope conditions

Whether the site falls away from or rises toward the garage changes which standard zone layout applies, and affects where transitions and any drainage details are likely to sit.

4. Generating a preliminary profile

With boundary RL, garage RL, and length established, a preliminary gradient profile can be generated and used as the starting point for review, rather than working through each transition manually.

5. Reviewing transitions and vehicle clearance

Check rate of change between zones, and where relevant, consider vehicle clearance at the boundary and garage entry conditions before the profile is finalised.

6. Producing documentation

Export a profile diagram with RLs, gradients, and transition information so drafting, engineering, certification, and site teams are working from the same reference.
